Base Preparation & Drainage

A patio is only as good as its base. We excavate to a minimum of 150mm below finished level, install a compacted Type 1 sub-base, and lay on either a sharp sand bed (for natural stone) or a full mortar bed (for porcelain and large-format tiles). All patios are laid to a fall of 1:60 minimum to ensure surface water drains away from the house.

In London gardens, drainage is often the critical factor. We design appropriate drainage channels, soakaways, or connection to existing surface water drains as part of every patio installation.

Typical Costs & Timescales

A typical 20–30 m² patio installation takes two to four days on site. Larger patios with drainage works, steps, or retaining walls may take a full week. We provide a fixed-price quotation after a free site visit.

Typical total costs for a 25 m² porcelain patio (excavation, sub-base, mortar bed, paving, jointing, and waste removal): £2,500–£4,500 depending on the material chosen and site access conditions.
