About West Hampstead
West Hampstead developed from the 1870s onwards following the arrival of the railway. The area was built as a middle-class suburb with substantial Victorian houses, many of which have since been converted into flats.
The area was known as "West End" until the 1950s when it was renamed to capitalise on the cachet of nearby Hampstead. The original station buildings at West Hampstead Thameslink are Grade II listed.
